Got Expired Drugs?
We Can Help!
Do you have anxiety about expired or unused medications that are hanging around your barn? You’re not alone. We hear questions about correct disposal methods from our clients all the time…and with good reason!
A recent study of surface water sources showed that 96% of samples were contaminated, and medications including steroids, hormones, and antibiotics have been identified in rivers, lakes and streams. At Pacific Crest Sporthorse we are committed to helping protect our environment. That’s why we’ve decided to help you properly dispose of your expired medications to prevent environmental contamination
Here are some suggestions to help you deal with your expired medications:
Many medications are still safe and effective after expiration. Ask your vet before you make the decision to dispose of a medication.
Never pour medications in the sink or flush them down the toilet.
To safely dispose of medications at home or in your barn, empty them into a sealable plastic bag and combine with an unpalatable substance such as cat litter or used coffee grounds to discourage pets or children from opening bags. These sealed bags can be put in the trash.
If you aren’t comfortable putting medications in the trash, take them to local drop off sites (including many local police or fire stations) for disposal. Drop-off locations near you are easy to locate online.
Don’t want to deal with expired medications at all? Simply set them aside and one of our doctors will be happy to take them back to PCS. We will make sure they are disposed of properly as a part of our ongoing efforts to save our world!
